Serpae (pronounces SUR-PAY) tetras are among the most popular tetras available and for good reason. Their colours intensify with age. They originate from the slow moving backwaters of the Amazon river. They spend much of their time in tight shoals around tree roots or other underwater features. It is best to replicate this in the aquarium by adding tall ornaments and plants to provide shaded areas. This is a species that does best in small shoals. Other large tetras, dwarf gouramis and smaller cichlids such as Rams make great tank mates for Serpae tetras.
Serpae tetras are mid water feeding omnivores. They prefer a variety of foods including daphnia, flake and small pellets. These fish are a shoaling tetra and should be kept in groups of at least six. If you keep even larger numbers, it is more likely that they will express better colours and natural behaviour.
